The triathlon consists of 3 disciplines namely running, cycling and swimming. It starts with swimming, then a bicycle ride which is then followed by a run. This is the most widely used order of events however there are triathlons with similar disciplines in various order of events. All triathlons are completed without a single break in between. The participants who take part in this particular event are called Triathletes. The Indian Triathlon Federation is responsible for the Triathlon competitions held all over the country and also worldwide. The Indian Triathlon Academy is a major project by Indian Triathlon Federation to train Indian Triathletes for International competitions.

The aim of this academy is to train and coach Triathletes for major competitions and also achieve some short term goals such as establishing development programs in various states, developing coaching and support infrastructure, establishing talent identification programs, and long term goals like establishing Indian athletes in the top 125 in the world rankings, and establishing India as the primary Triathlon Nation in Asia. Indian Triathlon Federation is present in various cities all over India such as Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, North Delhi, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh.
